Nonnas (Netflix, 2025): A tribute to grandmothers and mothers

"Food is love": Nonnas is a film about the women (grandmothers and mothers) who have held families (and perhaps entire entrepreneunial value chains) together through everyday tasks, food, and cultural memory. It shows how simple routines; ironing, cooking, serving, and teaching children how to cook; carry cultural meaning and pass on values.

I lived in Italy for almost eight years before I moved back to Finland and established a family with my Scottish husband. During my time in the bootshaped land, the nonnas (grandmothers) and the mamme (mothers) taught me how to, for instance, iron trousers and shirts and how to cook meals in their own regional ways. That is how I learned about the daily life and business particularly in Rome, Piedmont, and Sicily. I also read La Cucina Italiana magazine, stayed at numerous agriturismo farms participating in cooking in their kitchens, attended regional wine tasting fairs and Slow Food's events, where I picked up regional dishes and local habits. I learned how food, work, and trust are linked.

The film reflects this reality. It shows how enogastronomy teaching works: by showing, not telling. Monkey see, monkey do.

Five stars. And yes, extra virgin olive oil.
