This weekend I’m welcoming Laurence, a dear French friend I met during my years in Rome, where I lived from 1997 to 2004. We haven’t seen each other since those days – back before she moved to London in 2001 or 2002. Since then, life (i.e. hubby) has taken her all the way to Australia, where she now lives. She’s visiting Europe briefly, stopping to see her family in Strasbourg – and now, finally, me.
The last time she came to Helsinki was ten years ago, but we were living in Prague at the time and missed each other completely. This time is different. This time, we get to pick up where we left off – with a jug of something joyfully British.
Yes, Pimm’s.
My husband returned few weeks ago from Scotland after three weeks away and, in true form, brought back a classic UK care package: Paracetamol (as though we didn’t have chemists here), tea, puzzles, and a bottle of Pimm’s No. 1. Practical, comforting, and a bit cheeky – just what I needed.
With summer stirring, and my knee replacement surgery looming in June (my bionic upgrade is nearly here), I’m embracing every light-hearted moment. And Laurence, always game for something bright and a little eccentric, will be welcomed with this sunny glass of British nostalgia.
My Pimm’s Welcome Drink (Scandi-style with a Sicilian twist):
- 1 part Pimm’s No. 1
- 3 parts ginger ale
- Sliced strawberries, cucumber, and orange segments
- A generous handful of fresh mint
- A splash of Sicilian organic lemon juice (Polenghi’s, from the Spinagallo farm)
Stir gently and let it sit in the fridge for at least half an hour. Serve over ice with extra mint if you like.
It’s a drink that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Unfussy, summery, and the perfect start to a weekend full of conversation, reminiscence, and laughter.
À ta santé, Laurence. From Rome to Helsinki via Strasbourg and Down Under – cheers to friendship that travels far, and always finds its way back.
